Week 6: 7th March 2019

We spent some time today discussing the format of the group for next term. There was quite a lot of work on paintings done too and photos of these will be published at the end of the next session.

Please note that there is NO CLASS next week (14th March) as the tutor is away. The next class is therefore on the 21st March. This also means our final class will now be 11th April instead of 4th April.

Week 5: 21 February 2019

More exciting progress in the class with excellent learning and exploration happening. Here is the evidence me'Lud:

Anne: lovely development of colour tones and strong edges. The Background needs to be started next so you can properly read your colours and decide on the overall effect you want to achieve.

Brian: a good, bold and confident design with a nicely dark palette. If you want to take this study further cover all the remaining white areas so all the colours can touch each other and thus produce the full colour effect. 

Carolyn: this is really delightful. The way you are feeling your way towards the colours and the sensitive technique is just right for this subject. Try to quickly cover the whole surface in colour then you can start tuning the palette more fully.

Christine: Good tonal work, technique and observation is strong. There is a good amount of learning and recorded information in this drawing to support the painting that will come from this.

Christine: a strong start with bold use of colour and solid application of pigment. There is enough colour so far on the plant to now focus on the background then review the whole painting and develop it from there. 

David: a really good painting is coming here! Very good observation, especially the characteristic leaf edges and an increasingly confident technique with pastel and colour. It will be interesting to see what you do with the background so focus on there for now.

Janice: This is a lovely bold contrasting painting and will be a stunning piece when you are done. It will take time and effort but be free with your choices of colour and try to paint the leaf shapes rather than draw them with lines. Try painting it like you did your jazz pictures.

John: now you have captured (no pun intended) the main figure, the lion, you can now move to start on the background. Try to paint freely and use strong dark colours to increase the whiteness of the tiger by contrast.  

Linda: well observed drawing with lots of learning about the subject via the process of drawing. This should help you to navigate the painting that eventually emerges From these drawing studies.  

Linda: same comments as above.

Margaret: a really beautiful painting is starting to appear. Finish the yellow then start to refresh the leaves and branches/stems by blending fresh pastel on top off the existing colours. 

Val: striking colours and good technique to achieve tone and texture. Get the background in next then review and develop the colours in the bird.
