Feet, Hands and Tonal Awareness. Week 9

Penultimate week of term and we are looking very closely at our feet! Today we went back to a basic concept of light and tone starting with a simple dark-middle-light interpretation then adding more levels of tone. We watched two videos showing techniques for creating tonal strips and cylinders to help develop our tonal awareness and skills. These can be found in our DRAWING blog. Then we looked at Euan Uglow's tonal work in still-life and figure painting.  Here is our new work using the simple tonal awareness approach.

Week 8: Hands and Feet Mini Projects

Our mini-projects looking at the human form continued today. We spent some time looking at feet - paintings, drawings, photos. Using our iPad and a nifty App called ShowMe we deconstructed the foot from a design point of view. We then looked at how the seemingly inconspicuous foot can become the centre of a wide range of narratives.

We were down a couple of members today so we look forward to seeing what they have been painting when they return next week.

Some of us continued analysing the hand whilst the rest moved on to feet. The use of a mixed and painted acrylic ground has been a real bonus. Here are the excellent and very honest studies so far:

Feet!

Our next mini project is to study the human foot. There are photo resources in the resource page "Human Form..." to the right of this post which you can use if you weren't able to find any feet you liked. We will talk about how to look at feet and how to draw and paint them in class over the next couple of weeks.

New HANDS Resources

See resource page opposite for a new resource on drawing hands.

Final Mini Project: Human Form

For the rest of this term we will be looking at various aspects of the human form. Today we started with HANDS. We learned how to look at the hand in different ways, from the perspective of how to draw and paint. Then we created a painted colour ground using acrylics on watercolour paper. We referred to imaged on our iPads and from life in class. We will continue with our HAND studies next week before we move onto FEET.
