Week 4

A small group this week with one away on holiday and some folks being poorly - get well soon! We continued our mixed media paintings this week. Fabulous paintings with rich texture and colour. Highly energised feel to all the paintings. Enjoy:

Week 3: Mixed-Media part 2

We moved onto the second part of our mixed media project. We had completed the acrylic monochrome underpainting, giving it a deep texture. Today we started adding the full colour using oil pastels. Some truly exciting pictures are emerging. We have decided to extend the project to a third week, next week to fully enjoy the discoveries we are making in this project.

We are back!

We are now back for the new term and into our 2nd week. We welcomed Karen to our group - great start with your drawing and painting Karen!

In week one we did the usual induction, a quiz to check our knowledge from last year, followed by a return the key basic skills of seeing by drawing: how to interpret colour as a grey scale - drawing colours using only a graphite stick to show the range of tones from dark to light; drawing in line only to see the shapes and 2D construction in our chosen image. Both the quiz and the drawing exercise helped us to assess where we are at the start of the new course and to set some new goals for our work.

In week two started the first of our 2-week projects. The first one is "Working in Mixed Media" where we started with a highly textured acrylic greyscale painting. Next week we apply the colour layers using oil pastels.

Here are the first-stage greyscale acrylic paintings:

Painting thickly whilst rolling the brush between thumb and fingers.
Being so thickly painted, a hairdryer helps to speed drying in class.
